We started off fairly early so as to reach the Golden Gate Highlands National Park by day. We stopped at Bergville's Sandford Park Country Hotel restaurant for lunch having had one of the biggest hamburgers I ever saw in my life. Established in the Bergville Mountain village in 1850 this hotel used to be a resting point for weary pioneers and its refurbished walls have 150 years of history worth being visited.
We stopped briefly at a location called Little Switzerland just to be able to move a bit as we admired the landscape which is said to at times resemble Switzerland.
By the time we started approaching the Golden Gate National Park the landscape changed completely and more so when we got to the rather exquisite golden, ochre, orange-hued eroded sandstone cliffs. Soon after having left the luggage at the hotel we would be staying at we followed some tracks and explored the surrounding area. It was quite an experience particularly when we made it to some of the caves in the area.
By the time we finished the track it was dinner time, which despite being quite simple was very tasty. My bedroom outside patio was right in front of the mountain range and prior to having gone to sleep I spent some time admiring the view as I smoked a cigarette.
