On the way to Oudtshoorn to visit an ostrich farm we stopped briefly at the Gariep Dam to look at what forms the largest body of water in South Africa. We soon arrived at a rather unique village called De Rust, which was located at the foot of the Swarberg Mountain . Upon walking into a local Café restaurant I found it was fully decorated with rather interesting phrases and very creative artistic objects. I couldn't resist photographing some of them.
Our first visit was to an ostrich farming complex, where we were extensively introduced to the industry associated to it. Karoo's hot and dry climate proved to be suitable for big scale ostrich farming. Under the guidance of a Congolese guide we were introduced to the ostrich rearing mysteries, their different species, varied products and finally an ostrich egg decorating workshop before lunch at its local restaurant where I tried ostrich steak for the first time. We had some free time to do some shopping and having beenfascinated by the whole work involved I ended up buying some egg shell decorated ear rings and some Aloe Vera ferox related products.
