We bought a circuit to travel to Akaroa, said to be an attractive small town, founded by a group of French settlers in 1840, which makes it the oldest town in Canterbury. As we were dropped at the harbour, we decided to just stroll around and get to feel the overall atmosphere. It is undeniable that there are many French-style influenced buildings to be seen, as well as many Art and Crafts galleries, once it has become popular with cruise ships following the damage of Lyttelton Port.
There were too many tourists around, so we moved out of the centre after having spent some time in a very interesting small bookshop. Before heading back to Christchurch we still made a brief stop at Barry's Bay Cheese factory.
