The Rajasthan circuit - Day 3 - Fatehpur - The 17th of November 2012

On to another journey admiring the never ending beauty of many more "haveli" frescoes ... this time in the village of Fatehpur where we headed to fairly early in the morning.

Referred to as "the open Art Gallery" of Rajasthan this village pertaining to he Shekhawati region is said to have the largest concentration of frescoes in the world.

According to historic accounts the Marwaris was a rather influential community in Shekhwati  having prospered until the beginning of the 19th century, mainly due to the Caravan routes that crossed the region. The descendants of these rich Marwari merchants settled down in the  towns their ancestors had migrated to and erected such  buildings which they commissioned artists to paint, as evidence of their success.

There was such a contrast as we walked the streets lined with those invaluable artistic demonstrations and the life the inhabitants seemed to lead that at times it almost looked as if we were experiencing two completely different realities ...

(To be continued)
