We continued sailing around the area appreciating the beauty and photographing the wide variety of aquatic birds which were to be seen everywhere we looked.
We were told that during the colonial period products from the highlands were traded in the Izabal area and exported. San Felipe fort was therefore constructed in 1652 to protect the area from pirates. Having been later used as a prison and rebuilt at least three times in the 17th century it still stood at the head of the Dulce river.
I really enjoyed the morning and as we were getting ready to get onto the bus and drive up to the island of Flores I still had those variegated hues of green and blue "embedded" in my soul ...
