We left the hostel fairly early in the morning and drove 16 km North of Wellington to get to know what lay beyond the city suburbs. We ended up walking along the Makara beach and talking to some anglers who quietly sat on the small pebble covered beach before we headed to the small seafront Café to have an ice-cream and some soft drinks.
Because we were getting on the ferry to the South island in the afternoon we still had time to stroll around the Lambton quay, where we would be meeting the guide. It was getting warm and the small stretches of sand were beginning to get crowded. The more I watched the way New Zealanders "live" the more I felt closer to them.
