The sweetness of Southern India circuit (Day 6 late morning cont.) - Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple (cont.), Srirangam island - Tiruchirappalli - The 16th of February 2015

(...)

As we moved onto the area of the halls which were undergoing minor works photographing was easier, though the numerous carved images on the columns posed another problem - which ones to focus on, as most were very interesting.

As a group we were often approached by worshippers wanting to take pictures with us but amongst those a family of around ten members went further in regards to their approach to us for one of the teenage girls rushed onto the entrance stalls and coming back with a few sweets started handing them out to us. We didn't know what to make out of it, but the truth is we felt particularly happy and privileged with having had the chance of exchanging a few words with them.

In-between the sculpted columns a corner opened up in which several roof and wall paintings of exquisite beauty could be seen. I do believe it to have been the hall of the legendary bird deity of Vishnu, garuda, but whether I have got it right or not that cosy little corner made an impact on most of us.

Although the on-going works didn't seem to affect the Indian worshippers who moved about as if the temple wasn't being restored we found it difficult to find our way around, particularly in some areas where the required material was spread.
