The 8 day cultural trip to Iran - "Iranian Treasures" - (day 7 morning cont.) - Yazd, The Towers of Silence (cont.) - The 22nd of September 2014

(...)

Most of us decided to climb up one of the Towers, the smallest one on the right hand side, though it was harder than it looked, particularly because the weather was too dry and too hot. Curiosity moved us.

The moment we reached the upper part the landscape was astounding in its bareness. We had to go through a rather narrow entrance, as there were some walls around an open stone platform where the bodies were brought to tied to a metal bier  by a sacred girdle before being deposited on the paved zone, close to which there was in a central pit filled with sand, charcoal and phosphorus to prevent pollution of the earth

Once we climbed down we strolled around some of the remains we hadn't been able to visit before because of the tourist groups.

Our visit would later be completed with an additional visit to the Zoroastrian temple of the sacred fire, where we were expecting to learn a bit more about the Zoroastrians.
