The Sri Lanka circuit (the afternoon of Day 5) - Sri Lankathilaka Rajamaha Viharaya- the 9th of December 2011

We then headed towards the shrine, whose main entrance room consisted of an arched structure in the shape of a dragon.




Inside it the main Buddha image, which is faces the entrance and ocuppies the whole shrine is said to have been made, as far as the size is concerned, according to the tradition of the Pallawa School of Architecture. It was impressive, I must say and so were the decorative elements, whose designs were varied and particularly delicate.


 





We  spent some time in the Hevisi Mandappaya  (a large iopen pavillion used for orchestral offerings, beating drums and blowing flutes) watching the magnificient view, before walking down the flights of steps carved in the rock that led us back to the village, where we still had a few minutes to observe the surrounding atmosphere.






Just off the main road huge terraced paddy fields caught our attention once more ...






 







We drove back to Kandy in time to watch a folk night at the Kandyian Arts Association Hall,  by the Kandy lake ...
