New Zealand circuit - Westland National park - Franz Josef glacier - Matheson Café - Top 10 Fox Glacier Motel - Day 11 (afternoon and evening) - The 8th of March 2019

We reached the Westland National park by early afternoon and ventured into an two hour walk starting on the valley road so as to see the Franz Josef glacier, which according to a Maori legend isn't but the frozen tears of Hine Hukatere.

I must say that I wasn't expecting it to look that way, namely because I had forgotten it was located in a temperate rain forest. It was nevertheless impressive and so was its surrounding atmosphere.

We soon moved onto the lake Matheson area where we had an extraordinary dinner at a café restaurant bearing its name.

We then got accommodated at the Top 10 Fox Glacier motel, where we shared the studio with our guide. Soon after having dropped our luggage Lindy invited us for a forest adventure tour on which we were joined by three other trip companions.

We moved about hand in hand and in absolute darkness (apart from the numerous little lights projected by the fireflies and some occasional lantern lights) and silence. We occasionaly tripped over other people who were doing the same. I don't know how many people temporarily peopled this stretch of forest that particular night ... but there were certainly quite a few.
