The sweetness of Southern India circuit (Day 4 - afternoon) - Gandhi Memorial Museum, Madurai - The 14th of February 2015

We left the hotel in the afternoon so as to visit the Gandhi Memorial Museum, one of the seven Museums established by the "All India Gandhi Memorial Trust" in India to perpetuate the memory and propagate the message of the "Apostle of Peace and Non-Violence", Mahatma Gandhi.

The central building that houses the Memorial Museum is the historic Tamukkam Summer Palace of Rani Mangammal of the Nayak Dinasty, said to have been built in 1670 A.D.  displaying viz Nayak, Victorian and Modern mixed architectural approaches.

The several Museum Gallery rooms exhibit the Indian fight for freedom. Once I had paid the fee that allowed me to freely photograph within the Museum premises I decided that I would extensively do it as there wouldn't be much time to read all the information provided in the panels and despite knowing a bit of the historical events associated with the freedom movements in India it would always be something I could go back to, as not only was it very well organised chronologically speaking but also particularly informative.

We then walked into a gallery exhibiting handicrafts donated by the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, some of which were outstandingly well crafted , I must say.

We finally made it to the hall of relics and replicas containing 14 original artefacts used by Mahatma Gandhi and replicas of his personal belongings.

(To be continued)
