Erica wasn't aware she would be handed out the presents by her "godmother" Noëlle herself, who having flown from Nantes via Lisbon finally made the long awaited trip to get to know her and the reality she lives in, which was soon clear to be very different from the one on France.
Despite the language barriers they got to understand each other pretty well during the handing out of the numerous presents taking advantage of gestures, which are acknowledged as a universal way of communicating.

Despite the fact that I know it may not be easy for many of the "godparents" to travel to Cape Verde and this island in particular, once it is not a "touristic" one and therefore subject to special package tour prices like others, it is an experince that does provide those who travel there with a thorough perspective of what the daily life of these children is like, as well as the difficulties they have to go through to progress as far as school is concerned and a much more accurate picture of what the overall atmosphere is about.
