Diary of an emotional trip to Calheta de São Miguel (the afternoon of Day 1 - second part) - The 11th of February 2012

(...)

All of the girls were given presents and in regards to their reactions to them I believe the pictures speak louder than any word that might be written.

Sonia with her "godmother" Telma proudly holding the artistic work she had just finished prior to having been handed the birthday presents by Telma herself.

Lavinia (left) with the souvenirs her "godmother" and I sent her and Rivia (right) holding the birthday presents I bought for her.

Enthusiastically writting "thank you" letters for the "godparents.

Knowing how important Carnival is for them, particularly because they proudly participate in the Carnival school parade every year they were all given Carnival masks I bought for them with my own money and Mr. Breitenstein's.

Two of the girls decided to have their photos holding the presents taken after having received the Carnival masks.

Jussara (left)  wearing her Carnival mask whilst holding her artistic sand painting, together with the book sent to her by her "godmother" Cristina Ferro and Jocelyne (right) holding the presents sent by her French "godmother" Marie Hélène.

I have noticed (in the photos) something that has "touched" me and which is the fact that most of them are wearing clothes their "godmothers" had previously sent them. This may not mean much for many people ... it may simply be regarded as a detail, but once you understand these children you'll come to the conclusion they value what they are given ... and if they had been given just a pin they would value it as much.

I know my friends, whose "approach" to this reality was "new" (so to say) also noticed how much they value everything and it will be their precious contribution as "witnesses" and committed "godmothers" that will further reinforce our position regarding these children and our future involvement.
