Paddy fields could be seen on both sides of the roads to Aukana and I must confess that I was strongly impressed by the whole rice farming scenario. According to what I have read these paddy fields require a great deal of labour and need large quantities of water for irrigation. Around 879.000 farmer families are said to be engaged in paddy cultivation in Sri Lanka as agriculture is significantly dependant on rice production.
Many million hectares of land continue to be cultivated for paddy, 64% of which during the dry season.
We passed a few little villages on the way and there seemed to be a never ending bustle ... with quite a few people waving in our direction as the bus made its way along the crowded roads.
Sri Lankan are known to be very welcoming and we have already witnessed it, though we have only been here for one day ... I wonder what the first direct contact with the villagers is going to be, as we are visiting a small inner village this afternoon ...
